Indian National Army

The Indian National Army (INA) was an armed force formed by Indian nationalists in 1942 in Southeast Asia during World War II. It aimed to secure Indian independence from British rule. It formed an alliance with Imperial Japan in the latter’s bid to create a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Initially composed of Indian prisoners of war captured by Japan in the Malayan campaign and at Singapore, it later drew volunteers from the Indian expatriate population in Malaya and Burma.

The INA was headed by Subhas Chandra Bose and initially drew its inspiration from Subhash Chandra Bose, inspired by European fascism. Despite initial successes, the army was disbanded when India gained independence, and Pakistan was created as a separate nation within the Indian Union.

Bose had been a leader of the younger, radical wing of the Indian National Congress in the late 1920s and 1930s, rising to become Congress President in 1938 and 1939. However, he was ousted from Congress leadership positions in 1939 following differences with Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress high command. He was subsequently placed under house arrest by the British before escaping from India in 1940.

He reached Germany in April 1941, where the Indian Legion (consisting of some 4500 soldiers) was composed mainly of Indian prisoners of war who had opted to fight for Germany rather than be interned as POWs. Bose then enlisted them into military service under the authority of Subhas Chandra Bose, whom they considered their spiritual leader. After the Indian National Congress decided to withdraw support from the British war effort in March 1942, Bose announced the formation of the Indian National Army. At this time, Japan was highly successful against British forces in Southeast Asia, having conquered Singapore, Burma, and the Dutch East Indies.

The Indian soldiers were therefore keen to fight alongside the Japanese not only to win freedom for India but also because they believed that if they fought under Indian command, they would be treated better. The unit never saw action as a whole before it surrendered in Singapore. The British Indian Army captured most of those who volunteered to join after their surrender on 15 February 1942 during the Battle of Singapore. They gave up mainly due to logistical reasons rather than a lack of courage or determination.
